The Jackal-Blooded Siblings Rescued from the Storm
Dusha, Devi, Volk, and Volna are part of our second litter of European jackal hybrids, and their rescue was nothing short of heroic.
One freezing night in Bulgaria, we received a call about four tiny puppies trapped in a storm drain. They were only about four weeks old, terrified, and impossible to catch. Travis spent nearly 12 hours in freezing rain and snow, patiently working to save them. Eventually, he managed to bring them to safety.
Even from the start, it was clear they weren’t fully domestic dogs. Their size, coloring, and temperament made it obvious that they were jackal hybrids. The vet debated whether they could be part wolf, but their distinct jackal features soon became apparent.
Their names reflect their wild and free spirits:
Dusha (meaning “soul” in Bulgarian) is the shiest and most jackal-like of the group. She prefers to keep her distance but is deeply bonded to her pack.
Divi (meaning “wild”) is a mix of both worlds—cautious at first but sweet and affectionate once she trusts you.
Volk (meaning “wolf”) and Volna (meaning “free”) are the most social of the four. They love human attention and always want to be close to us.
Now around five years old, they have grown into beautiful, intelligent canines with a deep connection to their pack. Because they are hybrids, they will remain permanent residents at our sanctuary, where they can live safely and freely without the risk of rehoming.
By sponsoring Dusha, Devi, Volk, or Volna, you help provide them with lifelong care, nutritious food, enrichment, and the respect they deserve.
