BE A PART OF THE DREAM: A LITTLE IS A LOT
Honey’s story begins on the outskirts of Sofia, Bulgaria, where she was surviving the only way she knew how—on the streets, fiercely protecting her puppies and doing whatever it took to find food.
As a Carakachan, a powerful and independent livestock guardian breed, Honey is naturally protective. When she was found by a local rescuer, she was in a dangerous situation: big, intimidating, and extremely food-aggressive, Honey was seen as a threat by locals. People in the area began threatening to shoot her and her puppies, simply because she was trying to survive.
Travis, our team member, stepped in and picked Honey up from the streets. By the time he got to her, her puppies were gone. No one knows what happened to them. Honey was friendly with people, but the trauma of street survival left its mark, especially around food.
When she first arrived, it was impossible to go near her food bowl without risking an aggressive reaction. But with time, consistency, and a lot of patient work from Nikki, Honey began to trust. She learned that food would always be there. That no one would take it from her. That she was safe.
Today, Honey is a different dog.
She now lives at our farm sanctuary, where she has embraced her true nature as a livestock guardian dog. She watches over our land and animals with confidence and calm. She can be fed by anyone, and no longer shows aggression toward people — a huge milestone considering where she started.
That said, care still needs to be taken around food when other dogs are present. Her instincts are still there, and her past will always be part of who she is.
Honey won’t be up for adoption — this is her forever home, and we’re honored to give her the peace and purpose she was always meant to have.
