Meet Sulj

Sulj's Story

Sulj is one of the three Kangal brothers we rescued from a breeder who was planning to shoot them. He and his brothers had never worn a collar, never been on a leash, and never left the only property they had ever known. When they arrived here, everything was new and overwhelming for them. Out of the three, Sulj was the shyest, the most hesitant about human touch, and the most unsure of this new life.

But over time, Sulj has blossomed into the absolute sweetest dog. He adores people and has zero aggression toward them.

He’s gentle, affectionate, and has the cutest little jowls—not a typical Kangal trait, but one that just makes him even more endearing. If you’re not paying him enough attention, he has a signature move: he’ll shove his head right between your legs, demanding love and pets.

Sulj lives inside the house with me and my other two Kangals, and he’s truly part of the family. While he does get along with most animals, he does have a bite history with other dogs, which is why he’s one of our forever sanctuary dogs. Kangals, in general, are not an easy breed—they are working dogs through and through, not meant to be house pets. Because of this, we won’t be rehoming him. Our hope is that one day, Sulj and his brother Sultan will be able to live and work together in one of our larger pastures, where they can do what Kangals do best—guarding livestock in a way that comes so naturally to them.
