Meet Cheryno

Cheryno's (and Kiera) Story

Cheryno is a gentle, loyal soul with a heart as big as his paws. A Karakachan mix, he was born into a life on the streets—part of a small pack that had to rely on the kindness of a young woman who fed and watched over them. It was a hard and uncertain life. Over time, three of the six dogs in the group disappeared, likely victims of fear and misunderstanding from villagers who saw only their size—not their sweet nature.

But Cheryno survived, along with his best friend, Kiera. The two were inseparable then, and they still are now.

In early 2021, a local rescuer reached out for help, and we brought both dogs into our care. It may have been the first time either of them had known safety, warmth, or what it meant to sleep on a soft bed. Karakachans are known for their protective instincts and independence, but Cheryno was quick to show his softer side—calm, affectionate, and deeply bonded to people and his canine companion.

From the beginning, it was clear: Cheryno and Kiera weren’t just survivors—they were natural healers. Quiet, loving, and gentle with children and animals alike, they brought a special kind of peace to everyone around them. It was easy to imagine them as therapy dogs—and that's exactly how they acted.

By that summer, they found what we thought would be their forever home. Adopted together, they joined a family that had already adopted one of our other rescues, Hova, and included two very special children who adored them instantly. It felt like the happy ending they'd always deserved.

But life, as we know, doesn’t always go according to plan.

A few years later, due to personal issues within the adoptive family—completely unrelated to Cheryno or Kiera—they were returned to us. It was a heartbreaking situation, but done out of love and a desire to ensure the dogs' continued well-being. We are incredibly grateful that they came back safe, healthy, and still just as sweet as ever.

Now, Cheryno and Kiera are once again looking for their forever home—together. Their bond is lifelong and deep, and we won’t be separating them. They’ve been each other’s constant through every chapter of their lives, and they bring out the very best in one another.

Cheryno is the perfect balance of strength and gentleness. He’s great with kids, friendly with other dogs, and even does well around livestock. He’s calm, affectionate, and quietly loyal. When paired with Kiera, their presence is nothing short of therapeutic—two fluffy, steady-hearted companions who just want to love and be loved.
